2017 Team Rankings – Race 3

Some late race draw allowed the fireworks to be on display out in Las Vegas. The team rankings got equally as testy this week.

1              Team Penske

Another pair of top-5 finishes for Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski helps Team Penske jump to number 1. You’d think adding more Ford teams would have hurt the organization, but it seems that the added alliances are paying off.

2              Chip Ganassi Racing

Dropping back a spot, but still showing a lot of heart out there is Chip Ganassi Racing. Kyle Larson put in another great run, finishing second at Vegas. Even Jamie McMurray is keeping the momentum up by placing in the top-10. Funny to think I thought this organization was in trouble of collapsing.

3              Furniture Row Racing

Domination has a new name in Martin Truex Jr. Truex put on a show in Vegas and also had the race get away from him, luckily the racing gremlins were on Truex’s side and bit Brad Keselowski late. Erik Jones finished 15th, another solid run for the rookie.

4              Wood Brothers Racing

Redemption for Ryan Blaney as he rebounded form a tough outing at Atlanta with a top-10 finish in Vegas. This is a team that is showing a lot of strength early in the season, but they’ll need to keep it up over the 36 race season.

5              Hendrick Motorsports

Another gainer is Hendrick who jumped two spots thanks to solid runs by Chase Elliot, Jimmie Johnson, and Kasey Kahne. Even Dale Earnhardt Jr put his car in the top-20 after a tough opening two weeks of the season. Back to Elliott, he’s close and will definitely win one before too long.

6              Stewart-Haas Racing

Clint Bowyer continued the resurrection of his career with a top-10 run, but it was issues hitting his teammates Kevin Harvick (tire), Danica Patrick (engine) and Kurt Busch (battery) that sank the team. They dropped three spots to sixth.

7              Roush Fenway Racing

Split day for the team, Trevor Bayne was 13th but Ricky Stenhouse Jr had axle issues and finished 33rd. They dropped two in the standings and I don’t think they’ll hold onto seventh for much longer.

8              Richard Childress Racing

No battery issues, but no good runs for any of the three teams. The best was a 17th for Ryan Newman, it’s no surprise that they lost two more spots and with some of the teams below, they’ll lose more if they don’t turn up the effort.

9              Leavine Family Racing

A quiet 18th place finish for Michael McDowell holds LFR in the 9th place.

10           Joe Gibbs Racing

The effort was there, it’s the finishing results that keep JGR down for the time being. Two top-10s with Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth help. Kyle Busch should have had a top-5 finish until the last lap, and Daniel Suarez continues to log laps to improve.

11           Richard Petty Motorsports

A better run than at Atlanta, Aric Almirola motored home in 14th position, but in the grand scheme they still lost a spot to the Gibbs team.

12           JTG Daugherty Racing

Clicked off another pair of top-25 finishes without much flash during the weekend.

13           TriStar Motorsports

A slip from the previous week, Cole Whitt came home 28th and that’s about what the team will be doing for the majority of the year.

14           Germain Racing

Not a bad run in 21st, but Ty Dillon is still learning running these Cup cars and getting acclimated with his new team.

15           Go FAS Racing

A top-30 run for Matt DiBenedetto gives the team something to build on.

16           Front Row Motorsports

Landon Cassill and David Ragan were again a pair on the track, the problem is the finishes are sliding backwards.

17           Beard Motorsports

Did not attempt Las Vegas.

18           Tommy Baldwin Racing

Did not attempt Las Vegas.

19           Premium Motorsports

The two cars made the race and ran most of the laps, but it was so lackluster they couldn’t pass up teams that didn’t race.

20           Circle Sport with TMG

Have I mentioned that Jeffrey Earnhardt is doing about what’s expected from him with this team? Well he is.

21           Rick Ware Racing

Hey we ran a few more laps, 135 to be exact with Timmy Hill this time. By mid-season they might run a full race!

22           BK Racing

Gray Gaulding was the highlight finishing 34th, whereas Corey LaJoie was dead last after a blown engine/accident thingy.

23           Gaunt Brothers Racing

Did not attempt Las Vegas.
