Martinsville being positioned as the first Cup race of the year to air on FS1 instead of the Fox broadcast network provided Fox Sports with an opportunity for a reprieve from the drastic drop-off in viewership that plagued much of the first few races in 2017. Added to this, the Truck race was airing on Fox instead of FS1 – almost guaranteeing a significant increase in viewership from 2016.
For Trucks, the move to Fox certainly did provide a huge boost in viewership. The 2017 race saw a 35.17% increase in viewership over 2016 and ranks as the series’ most-watched race in five years.
In Cup, the ratings were not so generous. Martinsville garnered only 3.963 million viewers. Failing to top 4 million viewers meant a 6.35% decrease in viewership- not the 20% or higher decrease many races on Fox have been suffering throughout this season, but still not good.
This weekend, NASCAR’s Cup Series and Xfinity Series head to Texas Motor Speedway. Both races are on Fox. The Truck Series will return to the track at Kansas Speedway on May 12.
