Landon Cassill announced that he will be driving full time in 2012 with the remains of the former Red Bull Racing team. It is for the full season and as an added bonus, he is locked in the top 35 in points, thus guaranteed a starting spot for February 26th’s Daytona 500.
The Toyota Cassill is driving will have the number 83 on the sides, as previously used when run by NASCAR cast away Brian Vickers (side note: Vickers still has no plans for 2012 in any NASCAR series as of 2/9/12). The team is being run by investors who previously backed TRG Motorsports, Doug Richert will service as crew chief, and they will run Triad engines. TRG Motorsports and owner Kevin Buckler have no involvement in this new team
The name of the operation and other finite details will be announced in the coming days. With the points for the number 4 car that was run by Kasey Kahne, it is possible for a second car to be brought into the mix. My feeling is they will sell the rights to the points though because there are teams, Clint Bowyer’s for one, that would be all about buying them. The team will run out of the former Randy Moss Motorsports, which has closed down their Camping World Truck Series team.
Cassill was replaced at Phoenix Racing by Kurt Busch, then had a deal to run a start and park team for Front Row Motorsports. That deal had a clause that if he found a full time ride he could leave to pursue that. Look for someone else to jump in that parking machine at random points throughout the year.
