Matt Kenseth had a yo-yo of a day at the Martinsville Speedway during the STP 500. He led 36 laps, finished 7th, but between there was down a lap and stuck in the 20s.
Kenseth reflected on his race with reporters on pit road. “It was up and down — thankfully it ended on a fairly up note. We got it a little bit better there at the end, but the middle of the race was really a struggle. We lost some track position where I got hung on the outside — I just couldn’t make any holes and I couldn’t make anything happen. Then there at the end we had the inside and we got the car a little bit better and was able to make some spots up. Kind of disappointed because at the beginning of the race I thought we were going to have something we could race them with and just kind of lost it there in the middle of the race.”
The biggest factor in how his car was running? The weather. It wasn’t rain that came today, but cold temperatures.
“The weather — it’s one of those things where it’s the same for everybody. The track conditions today were extremely challenging with the marbles. They just wouldn’t clean them up — I don’t know why. If you had warm tires and you got pushed up in there then you were going to lose 15 spots sometimes — it was that bad. That was a challenge. You wanted to be on the bottom, you didn’t want anybody to get underneath you, that’s for sure. The weather kind of changed for everybody. I thought we were keeping up with it. We had a couple pretty good runs there and then we kind of got off sequence and lost that lap and then from there on we were just fighting back,” explained Kenseth.
The Sprint Cup Series next tackles the Texas Motor Speedway on April 6th with the Duck Commander 500.
