Another Track Record Falls As Gordon Picks Up Michigan Pole
- Updated: August 15, 2014
Yet another track record fell on Friday at the Michigan International Speedway. Jeff Gordon put his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet on the pole for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 with a blisteringly fast lap of 34.857 seconds, which equals out to 206.558 mph. The previous record was held by Kevin Harvick, set just two months ago at 35.198 seconds/204.557 mph.
It is the 76th pole of Gordon’s career and sixth pole at the Michigan International Speedway.
“I don’t know how to make it much better than that. This entire Axalta Chevrolet crew just did a phenomenal job. Our first qualifying effort today, and practice, was not good. I’ve been hearing a lot about tire chatter and we had it big-time. The next run out we made some adjustments and it was better. That whole qualifying session, from the first one, second one, and third session, the car was just near perfect,” commented Gordon after receiving the Coors Light Pole Award.
Joining Gordon on the front row is Joey Logano, who also broke the 206 mph barrier. It was the 18th top-10 start for Logano on the season.
“Close but didn’t quite make it. Once again. That is our seventh front row start this year, which we are very proud of don’t get me wrong. It takes a lot of effort to do that but we only have one pole. That is frustrating. That means that is a lot of second place starting positions. We were close again and just weren’t able to do it,” lamented Logano after qualifying finished.
Jeff Burton, making his third start of the season, put down the 27th best time in qualifying. Burton is replacing Tony Stewart who is sitting out this weekend’s race, his second in a row.
Another substitute, Matt Crafton, didn’t do quite as well. The Furniture Row Racing team will have to rely on a provisional and will start 37th on the field. Regular driver Martin Truex, Jr. was not at the speedway, instead was at home tending to a personal matter. He is expected to race on Sunday.
With only 43 entries, no drivers will be going home this weekend. The Pure Michigan 400 gets underway at 1 PM EST and can be seen on ESPN.
