A struggle of a season for Timothy Peters got a kick in the rear with a victory Saturday at the Talladega Superspeedway. Peters held on during a frantic green/white/checkered finish in the Coca-Cola 250 powered by Fred’s for his eighth career victory. Following Peters to the line was Tayler Malsam, Spencer Gallagher, Tyler Reddick, and Ryan Blaney.
While Malsam and Gallagher were surprised to finish in the top-5, it was the Brad Keselowski Racing duo of Reddick and Blaney who surprised many with their finish. Reddick claimed his first career pole in qualifying, but was busted for speeding on pit road twice. Blaney was also given a drive thru penalty for speeding. Neither driver gave up after their penalties. Blaney tied Peters for the most laps led during the event at 31.
The action started early on lap 12 when German Quiroga made contact with Mason Mingus, sending Mingus into traffic. Ryan Sieg and Ron Hornaday, Jr. were swept up in the wreck and neither continued placing 33rd and 34th. Mingus retired for 32nd place, but Quiroga made repairs and finished 29th.
Championship contender Johnny Sauter had a bolt pierce his radiator and lost his engine as a result. He finished 31st and slipped further behind teammate Matt Crafton for the championship. Crafton overcame damage early in the event and a pass thru penalty to finish 14th, holding onto his point lead with Blaney gaining ground in second.
The other big incident of the day happened when Joe Nemechek made contact with Ben Kennedy, sending Kennedy’s truck hard into the outside wall. Kennedy was ok, but his truck was done for the day. Nemechek took some of the blame on his radio saying that he made contact, but Kennedy’s truck drifted up into his.
From Talladega to Martinsville in one week, the Camping World Truck Series keeps motoring towards the end of their season. That action gets underway at 1:30 PM EST with coverage on FOX Sports 1.
