Career Overview

After making his name in the ASA ranks, Mark Martin jumped into the Cup Series in 1981 and quickly won two poles in only five starts. That gave him the momentum to go full-time in 1982. The family team only lasted that season as success was not as easy to come by as it was the year prior. By the end of the season, Martin virtually disappeared from the Cup Series ranks, making spotty starts from 1983 until 1987.

It was in 1988 that he joined forces with Jack Roush and his newly created Roush Racing operation (now Roush Fenway Racing). Right off the bat the team made waves and was a constant threat for a win. That first win finally came at Rockingham in 1989 and helped keep Martin in the championship fight until the last race.

The next year, 1990, Martin won three time and went toe to toe with Dale Earnhardt for the championship. He came up just shy, as an early year point penalty cost him the title. Not to be discouraged, Martin continued to be a threat every weekend the Cup Series was in action.

A championship was never meant to be as Martin was cursed that another driver would have a slightly better year than him. For example, in 1998 Martin won seven times, scored 22 top-5 finishes and 26 top-10 finishes in 33 races. The problem was Jeff Gordon won 13 times, finished in the top-5 26 times and in the top-10 28 times that year.

Overall, Martin would finish second in the championship a staggering five times, the last coming in 2009. That year again Martin put up great numbers, but Jimmie Johnson did just slightly better.

He will also go down as probably one of the last drivers to compete into his 50’s and be competitive. Martin was rightly inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2017.
