Career Overview

Regan Smith began his Cup Series career as a developmental driver for Ginn Racing, splitting time with veteran Mark Martin during the 2007 season. The plan changed when Sterling Marlin was released from the team and Smith was moved to replace him, with Aric Almirola replacing Smith as Martin’s co-driver. Just before Smith could drive a race in the 14 entry for the team, they merged with Dale Earnhardt Inc. Smith only attempted three races the rest of the year with DEI, but was rewarded with a full season commitment for the 2008 season.

That year, despite lack of sponsorship, Smith was able to run the full season and capture the Cup Series Rookie of the Year award. Despite that, he was unable to stay with DEI, and moved to Furniture Row Racing to run a partial schedule for the 2009 season.

Building up the Colorado based team, Smith broke through with a victory in the 2011 Southern 500 at Darlington, the first for himself and the organization. That was not enough to keep him employed with the team as late in 2012 he was released in favor of Kurt Busch. He did hook onto Hendrick Motorsports, as a sub for Dale Earnhardt Jr,  to run two races and also ran two races for Phoenix Racing.

For the 2013 through the 2015 season he ran part-time, making mostly subbing appearances on short notice in the Cup Series. Tommy Baldwin signed him for his team to run the full 2016 season, but afterwards, he was back in the unemployment line. After subbing for Aric Almirola in the 2017, it seems Smith has hung up his helmet for good. Beginning in 2018, he started covering Truck Series races for FOX as a pit reporter.
