Ray Evernham started Evernham Motorsports in 2000 and became the leading Dodge team when they returned to the NASCAR Cup Series. George Gillett bought majority share of the team and it was renamed Gillett Evernham Motorsports in 2007. After the 2008 season, Gillett brought in Richard Petty as a minority owner and re-branded the team Richard Petty Motorsports. Late in 2009 the team absorbed Yates Racing, fielding four entries in the NASCAR Cup Series. Since then Gillett has left the team and they have dropped to just one entry, the famous #43, with Andrew Murstein and Petty as owners.
